Fire Prevention Week 2007 Schedule of Events

NATIONAL THEME:   “It’s Fire Prevention Week: Practice Your Escape Plan!”

GOAL:  To save lives and prevent injuries by teaching citizens important information about planning and practicing fire safety drills.

EDUCATIONAL FOCUS:   The importance of having and practicing a fire evacuation plan.

PROPOSED SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Monday, October 8 HOLIDAY (NO EVENTS PLANNED)
Tuesday, October 9
Fire Prevention Week Kick-Off Event
Location:  George Washington University University Yard
(H Street, between 20th and 21st)
Time:  11am – 12 pm
Mayor Fenty (or designee) will issue the proclamation for Fire Prevention Week. Chief Rubin will announce this year’s national theme and announce key partnerships and teaming efforts to encourage fire safety on campuses and in the District of Columbia.
ALL FPD MEMBERS SHOULD ATTEND KICKOFF!
GW Safety Expo
Location:  George Washington University  University Yard (H Street, between 20th and 21st)
Time:  12 pm – 3 pm
Members of FEMS will conduct fire extinguisher training and campus safety education to students and visitors from the surrounding community. There will be various agencies (i.e., MPD, Red Cross, HSEMA, etc.) at this event.
Thursday, October 11 Senior Safety Expo
Location: Kennedy Senior Wellness Center
324 Kennedy Street, NW
Time:  10:30 am – 2 pm
Members of FPD with speak to seniors about the importance of fire safety (escape planning and practicing, smoke alarms, etc.) for this very vulnerable group.
Saturday, October 13

Youth Safety Day
Location:  Paul Public Charter School  5800 8th Street, NW
Time:  10 am – 2 pm
Community outreach event designed to educate young people, their families and the surrounding community in ways to evacuate safely from their homes. This school contains a large Hispanic population and we are pleased to reach theses citizens. The Fire Safety House will be present at this event.

Sunday, October 14 Open House
Location:  All FEMS Firehouses
Time:  11 am – 3 pm
Firefighters will be on hand to distribute fire safety materials and speak to visitors about the importance of practicing and planning evacuation drills, the importance of smoke alarms and other home fire safety tips.
      

 FPD will provide literature to each firehouse. FPD will also reach out to sponsors for community giveaways.
